Martin G. Tichy
With a violin teacher for a grandfather, it was perhaps inevitable that Martin G. Tichy would take up the violin at the age of five. Partner that with the privilege of growing up in Vienna, in a rich environment of classical music and you have the makings of the perfect child prodigy cliché. But like most excellent musicians, Martin has taken pains to write his own story, and not let the story write him.
At the age of 14 he changed lanes to play drums in various rock bands, and didn’t return to his original instrument until the age of 21. Since then his explorations of contemporary music, informed by his years of classical study, have characterized his career, both as a musician and as a music marketing professional.
While working as a product manager in record companies such as Warner Music and EMI, and studying Business & Economics, he played the electric violin in Austrian and Italian rock and country bands for almost two decades. High-energy bluegrass, country-blues, western swing, avantgarde rock, pop, Irish and gypsy music all made an impact on Martin’s style of violin playing, which won him a “Musician of the Year” award in 1997, courtesy of the Austrian Country Music Federation.
Around this time Martin founded Sound Communication in Vienna, an agency that specialized in the combination of music production with marketing. One of his most significant clients was the start-up company Vienna Symphonic Library whom he joined as Marketing Manager and then helped build the company’s status as the market leader in the world of orchestral sample libraries and virtual orchestration—a role he continues to play.
In 2015, Martin moved to Los Angeles, where he continued to compose, produce and perform. He now travels back and forth between Austria and California. His album “Tesha’s Fields” will be released in 2020, and his next album, “Gypsy Symphonies”, is currently in pre-production. Martin contributed violin, viola and electric violin performances to feature films such as The Three Musketeers and Underworld IV, as well as to TV scores and trailer music.
In September 2017 Martin performed as a soloist at the famed "Hollywood in Vienna" Gala Concert at Wiener Konzerthaus and shared the stage with Danny Elfman and the Radio Symphony Orchestra Vienna.
